Rider Testimonials
Kevin Cahill (50), Founding Trustee, Edwards Deming Institute – Revolutionized Japan’s Industrial Industry post WWII (Wikipedia): “David’s overall system approach had great appeal for me. His comprehensive skills-oriented program helped me understand the many key pieces to cycling and how they all fit together. He helped me understand heart rate, corrected my pedaling, sprinting, and standing techniques, as well as my fear of steep MTN bike single tracks. David’s guidance transformed me from a 225 lb beginner to a fit 190 lb cyclist who can hold his own on group rides such as Montrose. I have become efficient and confident with situations such as car doors, off-camber turns, technical descents, rocks in the road, etc. I used to fear climbing, and now I look forward to it and have been on numerous 10,000+ foot climbing days. I can’t thank David enough for his training, support and guidance, and I look forward to continuing to learn and grow as a cyclist in his outstanding program.”
Richard Schoenberg (51), CEO F3 Ferrari Racing Team: “After several months of trying to learn the in’s and out’s of riding, I felt like I had “stalled” in my development. I realized that I need to find a reliable coach. When Dave and I began doing weekly ride/skill sessions, it was like changing gears! Literally going from the small ring to the big one in terms of my understanding of what is required to be a better rider. At 51, I didn’t expect to be able to do some of the things that I now take for granted. One year on, I can keep up with some of the more experienced and younger riders, and that did not happen by chance.”
Vanessa Collins (39), Pro Soccer Player: “I was a skilled soccer player and had no idea how much skill was actually involved with cycling. David is definitely a master of skill development and ride strategy. Not only have my pedaling mechanics, sprinting skills, attacking power, drafting and flatland speed increased more than I imagined possible and it has only been about 3 months since we have been working together. Combing the pedaling mechanics and other skills together with his training routine, I have seen my sustained and max power increase more then 30% since we been working together.”
Darwin B. “I’m a total beginner in cycling and quickly realized that theres really not many resources out there to learn about the sport other than riding by yourself or try to ride in a group (who are usually more experienced and will usually not wait for you). When you look for cycling classes, its usually the “spinning classes” that shows up. So i’m very happy to meet and learn from Cycling Coach David Brinton. His Fast start program is a must for beginner (or even intermediate) cyclist as he goes over the fundamentals of cycling, safety, techniques and how to achieve your goals. Included in that program is your “bike fit” He will measure the bike and make adjustment in order to maximize your riding capabilities, prevent injuries and improve your overall performance. He immediately corrected many things from my stock assembled bike and now it feels more natural and more enjoyable to ride. He is a great resource for anybody who wants to improve in cycling, whether for recreational or competitive. I’m very much looking forward to more lessons and cycling advice from Coach Brinton.”
Bob J. “I started biking this last August 2017. I joined a group of experienced riders and had major issues keeping up with them during our fairly long rides. I assumed that my bike, even though fairly expensive European bike was not adjusted properly for me, and started searching for a professional bike fitting service.
Then is when I came across coach Brinton’s fitting and coaching services.
I made an appointment and did the fitting. During the appointment coach Brinton gave same riding and pedaling tips, and some recommendations of safety riding, along with recommendation to replace parts on the bike that were not safe.
The next two days after the fitting and coaching, I went on three rides and hold and behold;
There was a day and night difference in my riding style and performance; my average speed went up, the hands numbness that bothered me, all but disappeared and I found myself holding the the bottom part of the handle bar a lot more, which I hardly did before.
AWSOME IMPROVEMENT IN JUST ONE DAY!!
The pedaling has also changed and I am paying a lot more attention to the pulling up power application on the pedals, making the pedaling more efficient.
I am very glad I have met coach Brinton because it made a huge difference in my ride and performance!!!
I am looking forward for more sessions with coach Brinton in the coming weeks.
I HIGHLY RECOMMEND COACH BRINTON FOR FITTING AND COUCHING SERVICES.”
James P. Another 5 star review!? Coach Brinton is very thorough and not only teaches you how to do certain things, where you can improve, etc, but he will take your assessment of yourself to help you meet your goals. He is there to help you with your personal needs, to whatever end that may be.
I had nagging right hamstring pain (possibly due to my tight lower right back) post hilly rides and he made some tweaks in my cleats and saddle height/fore/aft that has helped me avoid injuring the area further and taught me how to tweak as I become more flexible / stronger. He also helped develop a training plan for me to get stronger over time.
During the fast track session, Coach also taught me how to ride more safely and confidently. I am now able to better handle my bike, brake quicker and stronger, make quick split second handling adjustments to avoid an obstacle.
I will definitely see him again in the future. Reach out to him with whatever questions you may have. He is flexible and easy to reach.”
Marcos Cielak (53), Plating and Chemical Engineer: “I have been doing weekly rides with David for several months now. I feel as if I had learned to ride a bicycle all over again! My pedaling is smoother and more efficient, I can go faster on the descents and with greater control, I beat my riding buddies easily in the climbs, and my endurance has improved. Long story short, I have already become a much better rider. David experience and knowledge has helped me improve my riding skills and reach the next level. His techniques and drills are clear, easy to follow, and proven to work. More importantly, I am having a lot of fun. Who said an old dog cannot learn new tricks!”
Josh Goldstein (36), Entertainment Industry Executive: “I have been riding a few years and was not making the progress that I wanted. After doing bi-weekly skills rides with David for only a few months, my pedaling mechanics, bike control, speed, and confidence have really improved! I have been able to break through many barriers I was having trouble with. David is very patient and a tremendous motivator. I am excited about even more improvements as I continue to learn and implement more of David’s techniques and training methods.”
Vielka McFarlane (43), Founder/CEO Celerity Educational Group: “Thanks to your expertise and patience during our weekly rides, my riding skills have improved exponentially. Utilizing the techniques I’ve learned from you, I am now riding longer, faster, safer, and more confidently on roads I used to shy away from. I look forward to my rides now with great anticipation, rather than anxiety. Training with you was the best thing I could have done for my health and self-confidence. Thank you for also giving the same confidence to my son Rolando, nephew Shaq, wife Winnie, and Mrs. Atkinson. Our group outings are more pleasurable, and I no longer have worries about the safety of my family.”
Allen Bencomo (35), Systems Analyst: “When I first contacted David for coaching, I was 25 pounds over weight, brand new to cycling, and had a huge goal of completing the AIDS Ride with less then three months to prepare. David provided me with zone specific training programs and technical drills to increase my descending and cornering skills, pedaling effectiveness, and out-of-saddle control. David taught me such valuable lessons on pacing, pedaling techniques that really work, and the confidence to be successful. I can’t thank you enough! I completed every mile! You are the best!”
Bruce Kaufman (41), Commercial Developer: “When I told my wife I was thinking of hiring a coach, she looked at me like I was crazy and said next I would be hiring someone to help me drink water. The experiences I’ve gained and the things I’ve learned in the year and a half I’ve been riding weekly with David has dramatically changed my riding, way of thinking, and given me an instruction-set full of techniques, drills, training, and pacing methods that have turned me into a respectable and confident rider. Most importantly, I have a much more purposeful and effective use of time. David has certainly helped me improve beyond my expectation.”
Manny Hernandez (47), Computer Systems Analyst: “Before my weekly skill-oriented training rides with David, the climb up the hill to my house was written off as impossible. Now, with his coaching, I can climb it three times in succession, without stopping. He has helped me understand the importance of proper heart rate pacing, particularly with respect to my lactate threshold. He has taught me better climbing techniques, descending skills, pedal isolation techniques, and has improved my standing technique.”
Carrie W. Yelp – Coach Brinton is the best! I finally made the leap to clipless pedals and after a few too many falls I contacted Coach Brinton. I only had a two-hour cycling session with him and not only did I not fall, I learned more about cycling and honed my skills more than I have in hours of riding with experienced friends or learning on my own. I also unknowingly punctured both my tires the night before our session. He also taught me how to finally correctly change and patch my tubes. I’m looking forward to my next session with Coach Brinton!
David S. I began working with David last March in order to prepare for a charity endurance ride. I had no experience with a modern rode bike and really hadn’t ridden much at all since childhood. Coach Brinton got me up to speed fast. In just three months time I was agile and confident on the bike. I rode 3 centuries in 3 days and yeah, it was hard but I never would have finished as strong as I did without David’s training methods. I should mention that he’s also a bike fitting master. I had a store fitting done when I purchased the bike but after a few weeks was experiencing some knee pain. Once I started with Coach Brinton he radically altered my positioning which improved the situation immensely. It you’re thinking about training with a bike coach this is your guy
“I absolutely thrive on new challenges, and working with serious recreational riders can be the most challenging, creative, and fulfilling athletes to coach. Each has his or her own goals, performance challenges, positive and negative experiences, strengths and weaknesses, as well as family, work, and other commitments. Coaching flexibility, creativity, and experience are all critical for getting the most out of each unique athlete.” — David Brinton.
Bruce Christensen (57), Retired LAPD Bike Unit Coordinator, 4 Gold Medals Police & Fire Games: “I was an LAPD Bicycle Officer for 13 years and asked to be the bicycle unit coordinator at the Los Angeles Police Academy. My role was to enhance the Bicycle Patrol School and build our Bicycle Unit into a city wide operation of 29 stations with 650 bicycles. David, in addition to helping me dial in my bike fit, improve my pedaling mechanics, train smarter, and win 4 gold medals at the Police and Fire Games, I want to thank for your past and current help improving the skill levels of our instructing officers at the Los Angeles Police Academy and privately coaching our Police Academy Captain, Michelle Veenstra. You have amazing communication and observation skills, and you really helped improve the technical effectiveness of our officers on the bicycle program. You are the best coach possible.”
Andrew Garcia (61) Retired LAPD Sergeant, LAPD Cycling Team “I recently had the pleasure of training with Coach David Brinton and I can confidently say that my cycling skills have improved significantly under his guidance. From our very first session, it was clear that Coach Brinton possesses a deep knowledge of cycling techniques, training and strategies. One of the standout aspects of his coaching style is his ability to evaluate my individual needs and correct them. He also emphasizes the importance of proper technique, which has helped me to ride more efficiently and avoid injuries. David’s encouraging personality makes every session enjoyable, non stressful, fun and rewarding experience. He has worked with the LAPD’s bike unit Department OIC (officer in charge). I highly recommend Coach Brinton to anyone looking to take their cycling to the next level. Whether you’re a beginner looking to improve your skills or an experienced cyclist aiming for competition, David has the knowledge, experience, and passion to help you achieve your goals. Thank you, Coach Brinton for all your support and guidance!”
Richard Marlis (58), Producer/CEO Wild Canary Media (Wikipedia): “I have completed two years of training with David, and had been riding for 1.5 years when we started. From orientation session, sprinting, dynamic climbing, descending, pedaling mechanics, pyramid drills, under/over intervals, bumping into each other, jumping potholes…it’s all part of David’s program. I now can climb 10k feet on any given day and not be intimidated, can ride over 100 miles just for fun, and can group ride with nearly any bicycling club with confidence. I just came back from the Pyrenees in France riding two huge HC climbs, the Port De Bales and Col du Tourmalet, on the same day as the Tour de France pros. David has trained me for things I never thought possible. His enthusiasm, encouragement and incredible teaching techniques all pay off. Thank you for all you have done, and I look forward to many more years of fun and torture.”
John Goodman (47), Emmy Award Winning Composer: “David’s positive attitude and original techniques have helped me to be the best rider I can be. I employ his training concepts and skills teachings on every ride and during every pedal stroke. His ability to listen and then give you just the right feedback and regiment is spot on – and all the time, with great encouragement. There’s no question that I ride as well as I do and have accomplished so much is because of my work with David.”
Lea Newton (39), Founder Spinky’s Cookies: “I contacted David because I had horrible “saddle” issues. After fitting my bike and teaching me great pedaling techniques, my saddle issues were not only solved, but I am faster, smoother, and more efficient. I joined David’s training and skills development program during his winter training and epic rides phase. In the spring I noticed tremendous improvements. My gains were a combination of many skills that led to one huge impact…especially his pedaling/muscle isolation techniques, which is the equivalent of turning on the turbo charger. Also, his skills sessions have been extremely valuable, especially with descending. At 100 pounds, I can now out descend many heavier riders. I have improved so quickly and have gained so much in so little time. Thanks Dave!”
Sue Rinehard (37), LAPD Forensics: “When I first looked for a coach, I had just done my first criterium and had my first big crash with broken bones, road rash, and all. I had lost all confidence on the bike and was extremely nervous about riding in groups. Dave, you taught me so many bike handling skills that I had never before achieved and helped me become more confident than ever. I continue to work on all of the skills you taught me, and I hear your voice in my head as I’m doing it. Thanks for teaching me to be a safer, more skilled, and confident rider.”
Elliott Joelson (44), VP South Brook Equities: “Before David coached me, I always had trouble descending fast with confidence, despite the number of books and articles I had read on the subject. He changed all that. His unique techniques on descending made all the difference. Now, I can hit those corners fast, while being in total control without the fear of crashing.”
Chris Caparon (46), COO Cforia Software: “I do not race in sanctioned events. What I mean to say is on our local rides we’re not racing, but we are always racing. I enlisted David’s help to improve my pedaling mechanics, descending skills, and competitiveness in group rides. The time I spent with David delivered far more than I expected. Before David, I just aimlessly rode my bike, and now I ride it faster, safer, and far more intelligently than ever before.”
Chris Schneider (52), Teacher: “When I first started with David, I had been riding for 18 years, but was absolutely horrified on descents. Everyone I rode with knew they would have to wait at the bottom, even if I was first up. I regularly practiced the apex, eye line, and weight distribution techniques David taught me during our Skills Sessions. I am now descending faster than half the pack on the Barry Ride hitting speeds of 43mph. Nearly twice as fast as before. Riders on my club announced they had never seen me go so fast. I am so grateful to now be a more well-rounded cyclist who pedals in circles, descends fast, comfortable with group riding, can sprint, and I ride with more smiles, then grimaces.”
Kelly Morris (44), Senior IT Auditor: “I was a frustrated, cyclist that had not seen any improvement for over a year. I couldn’t believe that 12 mph average was the best I could achieve. I found David through a web search and was impressed the first time we spoke. He is all you could ask for in a coach: friendly, outgoing, and encouraging. I think of him, not as a coach, but as a friend since he cares about my wellbeing. Over the last 4 months we have ridden together almost every week. I have seen big improvements in my average speed and handling skills. I used to avoid hills, and now I can climb hills that used to make me break out in a cold sweat! Several of my cycling buddies have commented on my improved confidence, skills and, speed! Now I average 14 mph and still improving.”
Haroldo Camacho (51), Author, Master Racer: “The information and skills I learned from my first sessions with Dave were amazing. In only 6 weeks, Dave’s pedaling techniques, training regime, and race strategies took me from a recreational cyclist to a top contender in my racing category. I felt much more confidence on the climbs, stronger, and able to respond more quickly and effectively to attacks. Thanks again, and I know this is only the first part of the process, I’m really excited for what’s coming next!”
Don Crane (49), CEO in Medical Field: “I found David, mostly through luck. I’ve taught a lot of kids to swim and have been around of lot of coaching, and I can assure you that David is a born teacher. His bias towards enthusiastic positive reinforcement, coupled with very clear and prompt correction is really effective. He has the knack! Watching how he gets 20 riders at a time make major strides forward in a two hour clinic is really impressive. And his technical knowledge is amazing. Bicycling is not just hoping on a bike a pounding on pedals…a fact I’m coming to understand. The multitude of seemingly small bits of advice David imparts really adds-up. I’ve worked with David for several months now, and I know I’m light years ahead of where I would be if I continued to coach myself.”
Jeff Kreger (39), Investment Broker: “During my first session with Dave, we discussed my challenges and goals. He put together a training and on-the-bike skills program that fit perfectly within my hectic work and family life. He taught me various pedaling techniques and the importance of listening to my heart rate. Mastering recovery, truly is an art form. I now have the skill, knowledge, and motivation to achieve my goals. On a ride with Dave, I successfully climbed all the way to a place called “Cloudburst Summit” (climbing over 8,500ft)! My fitness had improved dramatically. More than anything, my confidence level soared.”
Ernie Kuo (33), City Parks & Recreation Superintendent: “David’s coaching and skill development programs had an enormous impact on my performance, training, and confidence. Although I was in fairly decent physical shape, I struggled way too hard to keep pace on group rides. After our initial session and one pedaling session, I was a completely different rider thanks to David’s technical bike control, pedaling mechanics, and strategic climbing. David’s personally tailored training workouts really get to the point. They not only helped with cycling’s physical component, but also allow me to enjoy training. My past “same-old, same-old” boring training rides are gone forever. My favorite program has to be David’s Winter Training Plan. It’s a great mix of weight lifting, light roadwork with skill emphasis, and awe-inspiring long mountain climbs. Inspirationally, David knows when to lean on his riders and when it’s time to pass out well-earned compliments.”
Bob Allen (38), Physician: “Having spent the last 3 years consistently being behind my buddies on our weekend rides/races, I decided to try something different. I always thought that if I just ride more hours, I would get faster and thus be able to beat my friends. However, three kids and a busy work schedule always limited how much I could actually train. David changed my entire thought process and method of training. Instead of just riding more hours, he broke down my training into easy to develop parts including proper strength training, endurance development, pedaling mechanics, and speed work. Despite my limited time availability, I was able to rapidly improve my speed and climbing ability by training on average only 6 to 8 hours/week. After only a few months, I started passing some of the riders who I never was able to compete with before. After about one year into my training with David, I am now at the head of the group taking the longest pulls and often leaving them far behind.”
Gaurav M. I have been working with Cycling Coach David Brinton for many years. I came to David at a point when I was riding with injuries and a lot of pain. I worked with David on my pedaling technique and bike fitting, and over time my pain went away. Once pain free I decided to race. It was unbelievable how much the technical skills that David and I had worked on like pedaling, jumping, sliding, manuals and bunny hops improved my riding. I am looking forward to the winter program where we will continue to work on technical skills. What I appreciate most is that when I need answers or if I want to tweak my routine, Cycling Coach Brinton is never more than a phone call away and always accessible.
“One of my great passions as a coach and something that continues to inspire me, especially as I get older, is to work with 60+ riders. The first time I competed in the Master World Track Championships, I was amazed as to how fast, skilled, and explosive many of the riders were in the 70 to 85 year age categories. To me that is true inspiration, and what I am looking forward to as I get there myself.” — David Brinton
Dean Ziehl (64), 3x Senior Games Gold Medalist, Attorney/Senior Partner: “David is the perfect coach for anyone who is seriously interested in becoming a strong, skilled cyclist. I was a self-taught, occasional bicyclist with an appalling lack of stamina for long rides, fast rides or climbing, and I had no group riding experience. Within six months of working with David, he prepared me to finish the Round the Bear century ride (with over 10,000 feet of climbing) and had me comfortably participating in large group rides with experienced cyclists. Since then, David’s deep knowledge and systematic instruction have easily saved me years of trial-and-error; we have covered everything – from bike fitting, pedaling techniques, descending, sprinting, intervals, safe group riding and, most helpfully, pacing and energy saving tactics. Best of all, is the personal attention and saddle time that David spends riding with his athletes.”
Pat Baker (85), 3-time World Hour Record Holder, 19-time U.S. National Champion: “David really cares and listens to my feedback, probably in ways that he never ran into before. He is very understanding and flexible with my schedule and health concerns. He helped me develop the speed, confidence, and skills to win multiple U.S. National Championships and World Hour Records in 75-79, 80-84, and recently 85-90 age categories. I had been a road racer in the late 70s – 80s. When I came back to competitive riding in 2006 after a 20-year “hiatus” due to back issues, I fell in love with the velodrome. I am now 85 and once again. Because of my back issues, which have resulted in a significant curvature in my spine, my bike fitting took time to fine tune. I owe a lot to David, and because of the 45-degree curvature of my spine, he miraculously worked out the best positions for me on my track, road, and TT bikes, but now because of safety I exclusively train on the 42-degree banked indoor Velodrome in Carson.”
Cycling Coach Brinton really cares and listens to my feedback, probably in ways that he never ran into before. He is very understanding and flexible with my schedule. He helped me win 12 US National Championships and set the World Hour Record for Women 75+. Our next goal is for me to get the 80+ World Hour Record in another two years. I had been a racer in the late 70s – 80s. When I came back to competitive riding in 2006 after a 20-year “retirement” due to back issues, I fell in love with the velodrome. I am now 78 and once again, because of my back issues, which have resulted in a significant curvature in my spine, my bike fitting took time to fine tune. I owe a lot to CoachBrinton because he miraculously worked out the best positions for me on my track, road, and TT bikes and now I can ride with little to no pain.
Lee Dribin (61), World Senior Games Gold, Silver & Bronze Medalist: “Having never raced and riding less than 3 years, I entered the Huntsman World Games, October 2004. David began coaching me early July. From our initial meeting, it was obvious I made the right choice. We talked about goals, adjusted my bike, discussed my equipment, and went for a ride to critique my techniques. He gave me “homework,” which I did during the following weeks. On other skills sessions, he taught me how to sprint and time trial. He destroyed my body going up little T, but he also, and at just the right times was very inspiring. Without his coaching, I could not have won the 60+ TT, much less smash the existing record. His help was also invaluable in my getting silver in the road race and bronze in the hill climb. David is a great person, a better friend, and he has been there for me in the glory of victory and depths of despair. Thank you David!! Big time.”
Adrienne Rubin (70), Novice Rider, Preparing for California Coast Classic: “David can teach anyone, young or old, to ride a bike and ride it well. First, he helped me decide on the proper bike for me and fit it to me perfectly. Although I had endurance, I was unable to climb, and David taught me how to take on the hills, which are so challenging at my age. David instills confidence. He imparts his knowledge, skill, and expertise with ease every step of the way. I was a true novice, needing help with the gears, the clips, even stopping and starting. After several lessons, I was confident and ready for the California Coast Classic, the 8 day fun and exciting tour from San Francisco to Los Angeles benefiting the Arthritis Foundation. You will not find a better teacher at any level.”
Anthony G. “Can anyone think of a sport where you can be coached over the internet, by a coach that you have never met? There are probably thousands of “wanna be” cycling coaches that want to sell you a training plan and then coach you over the web. This is ridiculous! What about your pedaling technique? Or, your setup? Or the many other skill aspects of cycling they will never see. How in the world can they coach you? Dave is a “real” coach that has been coaching for decades and an Olympic medalist. I am 65 and made every mistake in the book trying to get faster and stronger until I met Dave Brinton. In just three sessions my lactate threshold has already improved 14%, My power 16% and my climbing power and speed 22%. All of this…by simply learning the skills of high performance cycling. Finally, I can assure you of one thing, you will only make marginal progress by downloading a training plan if any at all without first taking a skills based approach like you would in any other sport in the world.”
Susan Long (62), Ultra Distance Rider: “I recently completed a 16-day, 1200-mile tour through Colorado, Wyoming and Montana. I was challenged by the 55,000ft of climbing, but made it strongly over every pass. I credit much of my success to David’s expert coaching. During the spring and early summer we met regularly to work on my skills and ride strategy. That included sprint training, climbing techniques, pedaling techniques, weight training, and daily training routines. David’s experience as a professional cyclist, his many years as a cycling coach, and his pleasant personality make him an outstanding coach for anyone trying to reach particular goals. Whether you are a competitor or a person like me who seeks to continually improve, I guarantee that David can help you get the results you want. There is still so much more I look forward to learning from David.”
“Devoting so many years to racing at pro and international levels provides me with experience that a coach can not gain without being there themselves. On the flip side, top athletes don’t always make great coaches. Just like racing, it takes many years to develop the experience and diversity to help experienced racers achieve the next level. I have always been a very analytical and tactical savvy rider breaking down what worked and what didn’t work and not only learning from my own experiences but also the experiences of others. just as it has made an positive impact on my career, helping racers hone their analytical ability also contributes greatly to their sudden jump forward and of course makes me feel good as a coach.” — David Brinton
“I clearly remember what it was like when I first started racing and how intimidating it was. I didn’t know how to warm up, where to position myself, how to stay out of trouble, and what it takes to set up the ideal position for the sprint. A consistent pattern of the Cat 4 and 5 riders that I work with is that they quick to become among the better skilled and more strategically savvy racers. Helping beginning racers breeze through to higher categories and improve faster than their competitors is an aspect of coaching I truly enjoy.” — David Brinton
Ivie Crawford (23), Pro Racer, JETCycling Women’s Pro Team, NRC, U25: “I want you to know that I am super grateful to have started my career with you as a coach. I am currently known as one of the best bike handlers and descenders in the women’s pro peloton, and have you to thank. There have been some people that haven’t seen me ride but once they knew I learned technique from you they immediately respect my riding and skill. Technique is the part of my riding that I pride myself on soo much and am now known for. David’s techniques and race experience greatly sets him apart from other coaches. How to be aggressive enough to hold a high position, descend fast, and avoid crashes. With his past experience he has been in nearly every situation that could happen in a race, can help you overcome obstacles, and even know when an opportune moment might occur before the race begins.”
Cory Greenberg (22), Cat 1, NOW-MS Society Racing Team: “I started working with Dave at the age of 18 as a Cat 5 racer who knew nothing about training and bike handling. Now at the age of 22, I am a Cat 1 Road and XC Mountain Bike racer. Without Dave’s excellent coaching and bike handling classes, I truly feel I would have never reach the success at such a rapid pace that I have experienced in the last 4 years of my cycling career. Dave’s many years of coaching and racing experience have helped him gain a great knowledge that can help anyone. I feel that Dave’s passion, technique, and coaching ability are a key component to achieving your cycling goals.”
Scott Johnson (39), Owner/Founder Serious Cycling, Masters Racer: “As one begins taking cycling a bit more seriously than weekend club rides or an annual century fund raiser, investing in a personal coach is one of the most effective ways to achieve rapid performance improvement. There are a lot of training resources available today but none as rewarding as the experience I have found in David Brinton’s program. His battle hardened approach has delivered consistent results across a myriad of athletes and cycling disciplines. The secret cannot be easily discovered in training books or computer apps. The secret resides in David’s depth in real-life experiences, his ability to clearly communicate and his dynamic approach in adapting your program to optimize your performance.
Eric Barlevav (22), NRC Pro Cycling/U23: “When I started with Dave, I was racing as an Expert Junior MTN bike racer. In the two years he was my coach, saw my potential and converted me to the road. He had a tremendous impact on my technical and tactical abilities. I have utilized Dave’s pedaling and sprint techniques during racing and training, which have significantly improved my speed and put me up there with top NRC Pros. Dave has been committed and dedicated to helping me reach my full potential. His expert training, skill work, and guidance has been invaluable, and I continue to benefit from his superb coaching and encouragement.”
Ron Skarin (54), 2x Olympian, 20x Nat’l Champion, World Record Holder, Bicycling Hall of Fame: “I started going to David Brinton’s Clinics and training mainly as support for my son Matt. I certainly didn’t think that I would learn anything because my cycling career was very similar to David’s (competed in the Olympics, won numerous National Championships, and countless races in my day.) I went on many of David’s “Winter Epic” rides up Angeles Crest Hwy just to help out where I could and show my son that I still knew how to ride and wasn’t afraid of sweating. I even attended some of David’s sprinting, bike handling, and weight training clinics. I was very impressed with David’s professionalism and encouraging style, and found that I actually was learning myself! Then something very surprising happened! I not only found myself to be competitive again, but was winning races in hilly road races, breakaway’s, and even a few head to head sprints! In my best season 2006, I won the Masters State Championships in the Criterium, Road Race, Individual Pursuit, Team Pursuit, and Team Time Trial! The highlight of the season was my son competing successfully in the Nationals Road Race, then being the strongest rider of a team that competed in an international stage race in Canada, Tour L’ibitibi. (The same race I rode at his age 37 years ago!). David does an outstanding job of encouraging riders to enjoy the process of improving, no matter who they are, and gives you the tools to become the best that you can be. It is then up to you to use these tools to reach the goals that you set for yourself!” (Ron was my inspiration to become an Olympian. I saw him competing in the Olympics when I was nine. He has always been a great mentor to me.– David Brinton)
Steve Flynn (22), Pro Cycling, U.S. National Team: “Dave began coaching me when I was a frustrated MTN biker. He encouraged me to begin road racing to develop my fitness. With much work, Dave helped me develop the tactical and technical skills necessary to win. In less than two years, I upgraded to a Cat 1 on the road and finished 14th at the prestigious Tour of Willamette. The US National Team contacted me, and within two weeks I was in Europe racing with the world’s best pros. Dave’s talents are two fold. First, his training programs are excellent, and I personally believe his approach to weight lifting and focus on pedaling techniques are the best in the business. Second, he really listens to riders and develops custom programs for their individual needs. With Dave’s help, I was able to achieve goals I never dreamed possible. Through it all, he was a great friend and my biggest fan.”
Adam Pantastico (25), State Road Champion, Cat 1 Racer: “I started coaching with David about four years ago and continued being coached by him for the next two years. At the beginning, I was an expert mountain biker and a Cat 3 roadie. Shortly after, I advanced to Semi Pro MTN and Cat 1 on the road. The victories list is too long to list but I’ll say this, you don’t upgrade without results! Thanks to David, my dreams are becoming reality. His knowledge and attention to detail was exactly what I needed to move to the next level. Even today, I continue benefit from David’s pedaling techniques, and still use his winter training program. I can’t even explain how strong it makes me feel, and winning the 2003 New Jersey State Road Championship confirmed once again that he put me on the right track.“
Craig Edwards (43), Architect, 2x State Tandem TT Champion, Cat 3 Racer: “Dave has really taken my cycling to a higher level. His vast racing experience and knowledge in so many areas is an incredible resource. He has an exceptional ability to understand people including myself. His understanding of heart rate is very helpful in accessing recovery and knowing when you are over-trained and need to back off. His periodization training is the best I’ve tried. It builds on the previous, creating a progression of development that works. In preparing for the tandem time trial, Dave was spot on with the training and race prep. I knew exactly what to expect in terms of heart rate, power, and perceived exertion. With Dave’s guidance, I had my best performance ever to win the State Tandem Time Trial two years running. Dave is easily accessible and has always been there when I’ve needed him.”
Sue Skarin-McClure (52), Aerobics Instructor, Master Racer: “I have known David Brinton since he was a teenager carving out his niche and tearing up the cycling world as a junior and elite racer, while he was coaching as far back as 1985. David is truly a pioneer of private coaching. When I started cycling back in the mid 1970’s there was no such thing as a cycling coach. I was on my own to figure out how to get fast. Luckily for me now, I have David’s expertise to help me not make the same mistakes I made over many years. Even though I had raced for many years and taught countless Velodrome classes, David’s coaching has taken me to a new level of knowledge and performance. Regardless if I race or not, I have learned a lot about riding, training, and recovery. If you consider cycling as an important part of your life as I do, why wouldn’t you want to invest in the best coaching? You get what you pay for.”
Mark Rich (49), Property Management, Master Racer: “I’ve known David for nearly 20 years as a friend and as a coach. Since my time is very limited, I came to Dave for advice and was very interested in his Skills Sessions. He taught me climbing techniques, pedal stroke, riding form, standing positioning, fast/safe descending, and proper breathing that helped me accomplish my best season ever. I can honestly say that I owe my recent racing successes to David Brinton!!!”
Tom Stuhr (29), Cat 3 Racer: “I can remember the first time I talked to David on the phone. I was so impressed with his knowledge of cycling and concept of training. I’m from Lincoln, Nebraska, which means David and I have an “online” coach/rider relationship and it is working great. I’ll just be going into my 3rd season of racing and with David’s help and guidance it will be successful. David’s winter program has definitely increased my leg strength and he is teaching me the proper pedaling techniques. The thing I like most about David is that he teaches and explains his concepts. Any coach can give a rider a program and just say, here do this, but with David you have a teacher. He tries to make you understand your training and how your body and heart respond, so that some day you can coach yourself.”
Faris Schlueter (31), Cat 2 Racer: “I was just telling my wife how this was the most productive sprint workout I’ve ever had. Someone with your personal experience and eye for analyzing technique was exactly what I needed. Your emphasis on the most fundamental aspects of sprint mechanics and valuable insight in diagnosing weaknesses has given me greater understanding of and confidence in my sprinting ability. The way you sprinted with us, giving us immediate feedback and continuing with deeper analysis between each sprint really helped me put into perspective exactly what I need to work on, and that technical skills and effective power delivery are the secrets to sprinting faster. I really believe that by breaking down the pedal stroke the way that David has for me, I am finally on the right path to developing the kind of efficient pedal stroke that will be capable of tapping into all the power I have available. I’m going into my fourth season as a Category two racer and while I’ve done countless pedaling drills, I’ve never had this kind of skills and muscle isolation analysis. He’s shown me that my pedal stroke was completely backwards of what it should be. Over the three weeks I have been working with you, I can honestly say that I have never been more excited about the progress I’ve been making as a cyclist.”
Bobby Reese (49), Architect, Master’s Racer: “After one year with David, I feel as if I have learned a lifetime of information. I have observed David’s coaching style closely, and noticed how genuinely interested he is in all of his riders, both recreational and elite racers. He coaches everyone with equal enthusiasm and attention to detail. David has complete knowledge of all cycling disciplines—hill climbing, sprinting, descending, and time trialing—which he conveys to his riders with skills, drills, and exercises that have an immediate impact. After one year with David, my second year of racing, I am amazed to find myself beating other riders that I never would have dreamed of competing with. In addition to a 2nd place finish at the Pine Flat road race, I finished my first Everest Challenge in under 12 hours–good enough for 5th place in the overall GC.”
Mike Carlson (46), General Contractor, Master Racer: “Whether you are a recreational rider or a seasoned racer, David has the coaching skills, racing experience, and technical skills to lift your riding to a new level. His coaching skills, coupled with his passion for cycling and his students, delivers immediate improvements. I remember doing group rides after completing David’s “Fast Start” introductory session and being surprised I was hanging with guys that usually drop me. David has also taught me how to be in the right place at the right time in large group rides and races. I have found that riding/racing smart is as important as developing fitness. Many times David has ridden along side me (at race pace) in large competitive group rides whispering in my ear what I could do to improve my position and perform better. What more could you ever ask for!”
Sean Pitts (34), Amgen Employee, Cat 3 Racer: “After 3 years of trying to race I was still a cat 4 and only on the podium twice. After hiring David, I had a remarkable season. I gained a top 10 finish in a major SoCal stage race and multiple podium finishes ending with a cat 3 upgrade. David’s Winter Epic Rides and weight training program had me in the best shape of my life. I really believe David’s skills sessions and clinics also helped me excel so quickly. His pedaling methodology and ability to communicate and simplify otherwise complex bike handling skills is “first in class” and I’m a true believer. Thanks Coach for all your help!”
Haroldo Camacho (51) Novice Rider/Racer: “What I learned in the FAST-Start was amazing. I have better skills, feel safer on the road, direction in my training, and for the first time I can see myself improving fast. In six weeks, Dave’s pedal skills, sprint skills, training regime, and race strategies took me from a novice rider to top racer in my age category almost immediately.”
Cameron Fox (23), Student, Cat 1 Racer: “David has helped me begin my cycling career with as much of a head start as possible. After 10 years of competitive swimming and triathlons as a young teen, my brain was hardwired into a pattern of overtraining. One of the most important things David has taught me is how to go easy. This was one of the hardest things to learn, but the benefits have been great. The other thing that David and I talk about is race tactics. Being new to the sport, I found I was wasting power with needless hard efforts and attacks. David and I have spent many hours talking about how to make my efforts count, when to go hard, and when to use other people’s efforts to my benefit. Thanks to David’s knowledge and wisdom, I am on-track to earning my Cat 2 upgrade in my first season.”
Greg Colley (52), Art Dealer, Master Racer: “David has helped me TREMENDOUSLY! I am extremely happy I found him. Before we started, I was new to cycling. Within six months I was riding 250 miles a week with over 20,000 feet of climbing. Although, I have a long history in endurance sports, but I was injuring my neck, feet, and knees. I cannot say enough good things about how much David has helped me. Most importantly he instructed me how to pedal efficiently and with a pedaling technique that not only helped me ride more efficiently and faster, but also helped me rehabilitate my knees. David has taught me almost everything I know about riding and controlling a bike. Now I have a solid plan and am excited about racing this season. With David’s weight program, winter epic rides, pedaling mechanics, pack skills, and descending techniques; I hope to see myself standing on top of the podium!”
Aaron Tuchfeld (35), Owner Hollywood Glass, Cat 4 Racer: “David Brinton’s unique approach to competitive training has helped me become a more confident and efficient cyclist. With David’s help, I was able to significantly improve my power, speed and handling skills in a very short period of time. I had been off of the bike for many years after college, and when I finally found the desire to get back on and start competing, I did not want to waste any time trying to learn the sport through trial and error. David’s experience and coaching skills helped bypass years of fumbling on my own. With David you really learn and are not just told what to do. I now have a better understanding how to train, how to rest, how to race, and how to feel supremely comfortable on my bike, no matter where I am, who I’m with or how fast I’m going.”
Ellen Wight (28), Collegiate/Cat 4 Racer: “It’s amazing how much faster I’m riding and how far I’ve come in such a short time, and other people have commented on it. Dave has really kept me motivated and constantly improving by changing my training and giving me new skills to work on each month. I am even now attacking and getting involved in sprints. I used to be terrified of big groups and now finishing the Rose Bowl. I recently got a podium in my first Cat 4 crit. People say you can read a book and coach yourself, but that doesn’t compare to what Dave can offer. I’ve also looked at on-line coaching, but those don’t compare either. With Dave, you don’t just get a workout, you get someone riding with you, pointing out mistakes, and teaching you how to ride safer and more efficiently. Thanks Dave, I couldn’t imagine coaching at a greater value per dollar.”
Andrew Vontz (29), VP of Communication at Strava, Cat 4 Racer: “After coaching myself for 15 years, it was time to give a real pro a chance and see if it would make a difference. I chose Dave based on the comprehensiveness of his program, his technical acumen, and the fact that his skills emphasis seemed infinitely more valuable than a plug-and-chug written program. In just a few months Dave has taught me how to pedal, sprint, climb faster and more efficiently, and has given me the keys to unleashing my potential, riding smarter, and recovering better. I’m riding smarter and faster than ever. Dave isn’t just the bomb—he ’s the fuse, the flint, the fire, and the passion that will make you be fast.”
Joe Verdusco (36), Major U.S. Marine Corps, Cat 4 Racer: “David is a truly phenomenal coach and absolutely dedicated to helping his riders achieve their goals. He is an expert at building training plans using heart rate and power meters, always taking into consideration my specific needs and crazy work schedule. He makes it a regular practice to ultimately coach yourself. He is a friend and motivator, as well as a coach. His Winter Training Plan and Epic Rides produce great results for everyone on the program. I know this because all his riders join in on weekly conference calls, Winter Epic Rides, and monthly Skills Clinics. This is in addition to his one-on-one Skills Sessions. If you are looking for a coach, you will not be disappointed with David.”
Jeanie Conner (23), Cat 4 Racer: “With your help I have learned to put greater value and importance on the little things – I’ve seen it in my everyday riding. I have learned important pedaling techniques, sprinting skills, descending skills, and other assets that make me a strong and efficient rider. I now have a greater awareness of my body’s response to workload, and just as importantly, the actions and reactions of other riders around me. Before, I was frustrated and struggled during fast-paced group rides, and now I have a greater understanding of how to work with, and not against, the will of the group. Thank you so much!”
Suzie Given (28), Collegiate/Cat 4: “I entered my first collegiate road race in January 2003 and was inspired to train smarter due to trouble with the climbs. A month later, I started getting coaching from Dave. Each coaching and skills session, I learned new technical pedaling, sprint, climbing, and descending drills, and I continue to get faster and become more confident. My performance has excelled exponentially. Just 6 months on Dave’s skills and coaching program, I placed 11th in the State Cat 4 Criterium Championships, which was my first USCF criterium. Dave’s critique on my technical skills and tactical choices on group rides has helped me be a smarter and more confident rider. Dave has commentary on every aspect of cycling, and is very personable, so learning flourishes.”
Colin Higgins (24), Architectural Student, Cat 4: “When I first met David, I beat him up a hill climb on Chevy Chase, and he said to me, “hey this is my hill, nobody ever beats me there.” On the descent, he kicked my butt, and I realized I had a lot to learn about descending. He said he could teach me some great new skills, so I listened and within a month on his program I was climbing faster, pedaling with greater fluidity, and cornering and descending much faster and with greater confidence. I realized that with the proper bike handling skills and training smart, I could conserve my energy and ride so much better than before.“
Larry Salzman (26), Musician, Cat 4: “Hey Dave, I’ve learned so much from your formulas and still use them. It’s weird, I can still hear your instructive and inspiring voice in my head when I’m riding. One of the guys on my team is an ex pro MTN biker from the Midwest. The first time we trained I dropped him every hill, and I can still hear you saying “push through”, “you’re late” on all those pedaling techniques you showed me.”
Dave Weiner (32), Cat 4: “I decided to sign up with Dave after crashing out of my first race – which took me off my bike for 6 months and left as many mental and physical scars. I credit Dave with providing me the skills, recipe for fitness, and resulting confidence that allowed me to return to racing and thoroughly enjoy cycling. Like with anything, the more you know about it, the more you appreciate it – and I took a very studious approach with Dave. His descending skill sessions taught me the most efficient lines, and his bumping and rider contact skills taught me how to comfortably move through the peloton with less fear and better control. I was looking for hands-on and personalized coaching, and that’s what I got.”
JJ Lopez (33), Cat 4 Racer: “David is a coach who re-teaches you how to ride a bike. Forget everything you thought you knew. He instills the fundamental things you need to be a stronger rider and the results prove he is on track. I always thought that as a small guy, I would have no business racing criteriums. All the craziness is definitely intimidating, but after training with David and going through his skills clinics, it always surprises me how calm and relaxed I am during intense situations. He has a knack of walking you through practically any riding scenario so you don’t have surprises and know how to respond. Plus, in an era of fancy computers and power meters, he helps you understand your body with a better “feel” for what your body is telling you. His winter epic rides alone are an experience that any rider who wants to improve must try. I would highly recommend David as a coach, no matter what level the rider.”
Keith Mefford (37), Boeing Engineer, Cat 4 Racer: “In my previous racing and group training experiences, I always had lingering doubts on whether I was training hard enough, had the necessary skills, and using the right racing tactics. All these doubts left me with an attitude of lowered expectations as a rider and racer. After completing David’s FAST-Start Program those doubts have faded away. I now have a proven training program that has changed my attitude and raised expectations of myself. David’s constant feedback on my fitness level, pedaling techniques, descending skills, and racing tactics have greatly improved my riding and racing capabilities in less than two months. I now complete tough group rides and races, where as before I would get dropped and left exhausted. David’s emphasis is to teach you how to listen to your body, read riders in a race, and scrutinize your pedaling, descending, and riding skills. In doing all these I have truly learned how to BeFAST.”
Dan Nathan (40), Sheriff SWAT, Cat 4 Racer: “I’ve been a cyclist and triathlete for many years, but decided to focus on bike racing last season. Dave Brinton has helped me tremendously and is responsible for bringing my performance and bike skills to a higher level. He truly cares about the development of his athletes. I’ve received one-on-one skills and ride tactics coaching from Dave many times. This personal attention has greatly improved my pedaling technique, descending, sprinting, attacks, and race strategy. Additionally, Dave’s skills clinics are very helpful. I’ve learned little pro skills that have made significant differences in my riding. Dave’s weekly conference calls provide valuable opportunities to discuss races, learn from others, and receive a former Pro’s critique of the race. Also, the structure that Dave has brought to my training was much needed. Thanks, Dave!”
“What I have found to be most effective in developing mountain bike skills is to begin with slow speed handling control, rear wheel slides, and other functional skills for safely negotiating technical single tracks. Once the fundamentals are developed, the real fun begins with learning how to best negotiate individual sections to ultimately put together faster single track runs with less effort and risk. The next step is to perfect the art of pacing and knowing exactly when to begin riding your own pace up the first, and often congested, single track. Nailing down this timing and applying better pacing strategies will definitely get you to the finish faster. Take a sneak peak at my short 2-minute stunt video.” — David Brinton
Mike Maniscalchi (51), Cat 3 MTB: “My first session was the Fast Start, which I highly recommend. In that one session, I learned so much and finally I’m on the right track. A friend referred me to David and I’m so glad he did. After many years of motocross, jet ski racing, and mountain biking I was tired of continuing to get dropped by my buddies on the trails and on the road. Within the next three months, I’ve improved radically and now dropping my buddies. His training philosophy works and his skill sessions speak for themselves. I’m now riding between 50-150 miles per week, and even with my busy work and family schedule and have never felt more confident, fit and overall just having a great time on the bike. If you’re looking to improve your skills, be a safer rider, or want to train for racing, David Brinton is the cycling coach to hire.”
Christine Irelan (42), Anesthesiologist, Master World Silver Medalist XC, 3x U.S. XC Champion, 4x State Champion, Cat 1 MTB: “At the age of 40, after a 20-year hiatus from competitive athletics, I decided that I wanted to become a bicycle racer. I called David with this goal in mind along with the caveats that I had never raced a bicycle, I had a very demanding and time consuming professional career, and I lived in a different state…. We talked for quite a while before I concluded that David appreciated my drive, sensed my potential, and had the background and personality to help me take advantage of both. Upon making my decision to work with David, I flew out to Los Angeles for two days to do his FastStart and work on technical pedaling, climbing, descending and other skills that I have used with great success. Thank you for a great four years of excellent coaching.”
John Hoover (41), Dentist, Regional XC Champion, State XC Champion, Cat 1: “I did a detailed search to find a great coach. When I talked to Dave on the phone that confirmed it for me. I flew to LA from Tennessee and spent three solid days beginning with the FAST Start and then worked on many skills. It was well worth it. His program had a huge impact on my riding in just three months. I won the first mountain bike race I entered after starting his program, I had been trying to do that in the expert class for four seasons. I am definitely training smarter and not wasting time on the wrong training programs. You set me up perfectly, and I won the 2010 Southeastern Regional Championship. This is in addition to winning the GA State Championship. This is now my fourth year working with you, and I am still getting faster.”
Jon Tanklage (31), U.S. National XC Champion/NORBA Overall Series Winner 30+ Cat 1: “I am basically a first year rider who had incredible success on Dave’s program last winter. Not knowing how much I would improve, I set the goal to win the State Championship Mountain Bike Series as a Beginner. I have swept every race, most recently yesterday at Big Bear. During this time I have beat the times of the winning Sport category riders at nearly every race. In my mind I can say that I have won the Sport championship this year and I will be satisfied in jumping straight to Expert next year. This will be tough and will require an awesome off-season.” (The year after Jon wrote this testimonial, I was still coaching him when we won the Expert National Title and the NORBA Point Series).
Kathy Sessler (42), 4x World Mountain Bike Champion, Masters Dual Slalom: “I’d like to say what a great coach David Brinton is. He helped me immensely while on the set of the TV series “Pacific Blue” where we both worked doing stunts on mountain bikes. He helped me learn to jump the mountain bike over cars and other obstacles and he is a fantastic teacher and coach…Thanks David!”
Chris Ziegler (41), Cat 1 MTB, Master Racer: “After racing MTN bikes for several years with disappointing results, I hired David. Our first skills session was at a race course that presented me my greatest struggles. Within a couple of hours of on the single-track, watching his technique and listening to his feedback, my technical skills, pedaling, and efficiency increased substantially. I won every race in the Sport category from that point on and then moved to Expert and finished consistently in the top five. David’s knowledge, communication skills, technical drills, and racing tactics really increased my enthusiasm and enjoyment for the sport. He took my fitness to the next level while minimizing negatives such as, crashing and stress injuries. Most importantly, David’s demeanor makes me feel as though I have a good friend, in addition to having an impeccable coach.”
Erik Flockoi (41), Master Racer/Cat 1 MTN Bike: “My newly learned standing skills (without it I’ve blown in the past) are giving me strength like I’ve never experienced. Your sprint techniques are giving me more power than I ever thought possible. Several people are commenting on how well I’m riding. My teammates are talking like I’m one of the guys they are working for all of a sudden. And I thought I was just good domestique material! Thank you once again! Having your coaching and Skills Clinics are the best thing I’ve ever done for my cycling!!!”
Gaurav Malhotra (36), Partner LHMP Accounting Firm, Cat 2 MTB Racer: “I have been working with David for about a year. I came to David at a point when I was riding with injuries and a lot of pain. I worked with David on my pedaling technique and bike fit, and over time my pain went away. Once pain free I decided to race. It was unbelievable how much the technical skills that David and I had worked on like pedaling, jumping, sliding, manuals and bunny hops improved my riding. I am looking forward to the winter program where we will continue to work on technical skills. What I appreciate most is that when I need answers or if I want to tweak my routine, he is never more than a phone call away and always accessible.”
Janice Bora (52), Music Teacher, Cat 1 Master’s XC: “Before being coached by David, I rode four times a week as hard as I could. I was killing myself. Sure, I used a heart rate monitor, but only to let me know when I was going into the red zone. David taught me how to plan a training schedule and use time more efficiently. He suggested I buy a road bike to improve my mountain bike performance. I resisted and resisted. I finally bought one, joined a club, and absolutely love it. He has since helped me with planning training for extremely hilly centuries. David has endless knowledge about all aspects of riding, whether it be road or mountain bike. He planned my race-day warm up and my pre-race ride. He has helped me with pedal technique, downhill skill, sprints, cadence, weight lifting, interval training, etc., etc. I could go on and on…”
Jason Bold (29), Cat 2 MTB: “When I hired David, I was strictly a recreational rider wanting to develop my skills and increase confidence. When we first spoke on the phone, he asked me if I considered racing. After a slight hesitation, the enthusiasm of David’s voice and the competitive nature inside me compelled me to say “yes”. I hung up the phone wondering what I had gotten myself into. How was an out of shape, retired smoker, and completely novice rider going to be competitive? Within months, I was learning advanced technical skills and getting top placings in the beginner category. At the end of my first season, I got 3rd in the Finals at Snow Summit. The next season, just over a year after meeting David, I won 1st place at the NORBA Nationals in Big Bear. Never in my wildest dreams did I ever think I would achieve so much. David was always encouraging, supportive, and engaging during our skills sessions. He motivated me to be someone far beyond anything I could ever have achieved on my own and for that, I am grateful. Thanks David.”
Mauro Paciocco (22), U23, Cat 1 MTB: “Your pedaling techniques have really helped me survive climbs and time trials. I always pedal like you say. In one year, I went from not even being able to climb the Topanga Hills to flying up hills with Division II & III Pros. I found your heart rate concepts so important to understanding zones and identify when I am about to overtrain. You taught me many things, but I believe your winter training philosophy had the biggest impact, teaching me about power, how to monitor overload, and develop my cornering and descending skills. It gave me a really a big advantage over the competition to have so much power and better skill. You are not only a great coach, but you are a great person and friend. You were always there for me. Thanks Dave!!”
Michael Marchesano?. Coach Brinton has done an excellent job taking my cycling to the next level. After many years of motocross, jet ski racing and mountain bike riding I decided to get into road bike riding. A friend referred me to David and I’m glad he did as I had a lot to learn. First we worked on getting my bike fitted properly which based on the reading I had done is critical for optimum performance on the bike. We then immediately went to work on the Fast Start program which I highly recommend. You can visit his website for all of the specifics. It’s very detailed program and he tailors it to your skill level and type of riding. I am still on his monthly maintenance program and continue to ride and train with David. I’m now riding between 50-150 miles per week even with my busy work and family schedule and have never felt more confident, fit and overall just having a great time on the bike. If you’re looking to gain more confidence on the bike, learn how to be a safer rider or want to train for racing David Brinton is the person you will want to get in contact with.
“It is fair to say that I am known more as a bike-specific triathlon coach. I have a long track record of helping triathletes become much faster, more efficient, and safer on the bike. As a competitor, I am no stranger to time trialing and love the art of making cyclists and triathletes fast. In addition to many years racing as a pro and doing countless time trials and long solo breakaways in races, I have three world championships and three world records in track time trial events. If your goal is to get faster on the bike and apply pro time trial skills and knowledge into your triathlon competitions, you have come to the right place.” — David Brinton
Meredith Zohar (39), 1/2 Ironman Triathlete, Worlds Qualifier, Roadie: “David is dedicated to helping every rider find their personal best, whether racer or recreational, he knows how to coach in a relatable way. As a competitive person, we connected immediately. Having never even owned a road bike growing up, he taught me how to shift and clip in for the very first time. I can’t express how much David’s coaching has allowed me to achieve success as a cyclist and triathlete. It provided me with the skills necessary to handle myself confidently in any situation. Winning my first stage race on the road was nothing short of a miracle; and would not have been possible without David’s attention to every detail. Likewise, winning my first triathlon (Malibu Olympic Distance) only 3 months after learning to clip in would not have been possible. I owe so much of my success as an athlete to David. Learning, not only skills, but nutrition, heart rate, how to train smart, take rest days, and listening to my body ALL came from his dedication to leaving no stone unturned. I could not have asked for a better person to get me pointed in the right direction. Not only is he an exceptional coach, but also a dear friend. Always supportive, caring and understanding. I’m grateful to have crossed paths with him in this lifetime. Every time I ride, I still hear those words of wisdom when taking corners and when pedaling. Thank you, David! Your knowledge and expertise as a coach is the reason so many of your athletes excel! I’m fortunate to have benefited from your years of experience as a World Class Athlete and Coach!”
Bruce Bornhurst (42), Commercial Contractor, XTerra Master’s Racer: “Something finally clicked in last Saturday’s skills session in regards to leaning the bike to initiate turns, veer laterally, avoid ruts, avoid opening car doors, descending, etc. They all share a similar technique initiating all with bike lean, which is becoming subconscious reflex slowly but surely. There is such a common thread to this concept, but it is so counter intuitive. Funny how many times I need to be beat over the head to accept something so elementary, but fabricated to be so complex. This is a testimony to your patience as a teacher. I am truly enjoying riding in general like never before since I have been working with you.”
Roger Crawford (47), Attorney, Triathlete/Father of Coached Juniors Ivie and Cole: “Cycling had always been my weakest leg in a triathlon. Coming from a competitive swimming background, I would consistently be one of the first to exit the water, only to be passed on the bike and just miss out on that podium spot. In just a few short months, David turned that around. He helped smooth out my pedaling stroke, and perhaps more important, taught me how to train and think like a cyclist. Not only did my bike splits drop, but I even felt stronger and fresher on the run.”
George Carter (42), Designer/Photographer, Master Triathlete: “For a doddering old goat my improvements and performance have been excellent. In 2002, I completed 3 doubles and 4 centuries between April and June 30th. All 3 doubles were consecutive personal records, with a best century of 4 hrs 50 min. In 2003, the technical improvements from your coaching were all in place. All I had to do was crank out your weight training program and get in the miles, and with all the refinements to my riding form, skills, and pedaling techniques, I was ready to race in no time. Recently, I got back into triathlons and earned two 2nd place finishes in my age group, with my bike section dominating other competitors. I have had two really great years now, and wish I had got to know you earlier. Any rate, this old goat is having fun and making life difficult for some of the young puppies out there.”
Jeff Sneed (28), U.S. National Team, Pro Triathlete: “Dave, thanks for your help! The your pedaling techniques are really paying off. My pedal stroke is smoother and I have certainly become more efficient. I’m also running faster off the bike as a result. Thank you for all your expert advice. It is great to have a coach I can trust for accurate and valuable performance enhancing information. I also enjoyed and learned a lot while riding on your Winter Epics, especially descending and economizing energy over rollers. Thanks again!”
“The most successful coaches of junior racers also raced as juniors. The secret to winning as a junior is diversity, reading races well, and exploiting the weaknesses of the competition. Many of my national and world championship results were from my junior years and living at the U.S. Olympic Training Center. The training methods, techniques, tactics, and success principles I teach my juniors are the same that helped me become known as the most diverse and technically skilled junior on the national team.” — David Brinton
Eric Barlevav (16), Junior MTN Bike, Pro MTN at 18: “In the one year that Eric has trained with Dave, his skills have improved tremendously, especially in his technical and tactical ability of riding. Eric has utilized Dave’s pedaling techniques during races, which has significantly improved his speed and put him out in front of his competitors. Dave is committed and dedicated to helping Eric reach his full potential, which is evident by the remarkable progress Eric has made. Dave’s expert coaching, skills training, and overall guidance has been invaluable and Eric continues to benefit from his superb coaching and encouragement.”
Matt Malsin (15), New Racer: “David, you are everything we were looking for and so thankful we found you, through high accolades from another “cycling Mom.” David is MORE than just a coach…he is also a role model. He has had such a tremendous impact on Matt’s cycling in just four months. He would never reach the level, high motivation, and appreciation for cycling without David. His personalized skills coaching, whether climbing, descending, speed, pedaling, breathing, and physiology has elevated Matt’s performance, competitiveness, and confidence to a new level. As a Mom, it is reassuring to know David is teaching safety first, whether riding alone or in groups. He is a cool guy and really understands teens. Matt looks forward to every one of their weekly rides/skills sessions. David has a trusting and caring nature and is truly an exceptional coach.”
Danielle Dinstman (13), Recreational: “David has been an excellent cycling coach for my daughter. He has taught her all aspects of becoming a competitive bicyclist, from basic skills of how to take care of one’s bike, to conditioning and fitness, and ultimately how to be a strong competitor. David is patient, and understanding while at the same time has always challenged her to be her best. He is an inspiration to my daughter, and I have seen tremendous improvement in her riding ability since he has coached her.”
Brian Duncan (17), New Racer: “We just couldn’t be more happy and thrilled that you are Brian’s coach. You have already brought him so far, and he is pumped. You have no idea how much you are appreciated! He has total faith and trust in you, and enjoys the time he spends with you. He said you are just “AWESOME”! I agree. You are truly worth your weight in gold! You alone took him from believing that he was never going to amount to anything, as a road/mountain bike racer, to a highly motivated teen who KNOWS where he is going and that he WILL succeed. I simply can’t thank you enough. I’m so grateful for having found you for Brian. EXTRA KUDOS TO YOU!!!!!!!”
Ben Volotzky (18), Junior National Team, (Son of Israeli Olympian, Chemi Volotzky): “With my desire and dream of being a National Team rider and professional cyclist, I feel very fortunate to have this opportunity to be trained by longtime coach and Olympian David Brinton. I truly believe in his program. I see my dream coming to reality through his detailed program ranging from pedaling techniques, descending and sprinting skills, to metal strength building techniques. Every day I hop on my bike, I see myself getting stronger, more focused, and ready for the next challenge. Throughout David’s “Winter Program”, which I believe really works. I saw my self completing my goals and exceeding past them, I’ve learned so much through this program, and I am not only much more disciplined on the bike but also off the bike.”
Danny Finneran (17), Junior Nat’l Team Pursuit Champion, Pro Rock Racing Team: “Before working with Dave, I was a mid-pack Cat 5. Within weeks on his program, I was much stronger and rarely placing outside the top ten. I quickly got my Cat 4 upgrade, and it only took three more weeks to get my Cat 3. This was due to Dave’s sprinting techniques/drills, how to be a smarter rider, and customized training plan. I sprinted with more control and explosive power, while being in the best possible position to win. After going through Dave’s weight program in the off season, I had a huge increase in power and was riding much stronger than the year before. His program improved all aspects in my racing; climbing, descending, sprinting, power, tactics, pedaling, and time trialing. Dave has extraordinary experience and really cares about his riders, which makes him the best coach out there!”
Emmanuel Suarez (18), State Criterium and TT Champion, Cat 2 Racer: “It’s hard to describe David’s way of coaching, other than it gets results! All cyclists are different and everyone responds differently to training and coaching, but Dave is such a master at developing riders. I have not heard of any rider being an obstacle for him. I can account that his pedaling techniques, heart rate training, and many other techniques really work, and I use them all during races and training. As a junior, Dave really pointed me in the right direction with his knowledge and experience as a world-class athlete. When we started, the season was ending, and I had to wait to put my newly learned skills and strategies to the test. The following season I won many races, including the 2003 State Crit and Time Trial Championships. I started off bad as a cyclist with a goal to turn pro. The goal is already closely becoming realty.”
Andrew Ramage (18), Cat 2: “During my first year with David, I upgraded from Cat 3 to Cat 2 and now currently chasing my Cat 1 upgrade. David taught me more about tactics and improving my bike handling skills in 6 months than I had learned in three years of racing. In my first few months with David, we focused a lot on my pedaling and sprinting skills. This was important to me being on junior gears racing in the men’s field. I was able to win Cat 3 sprints and compete in Pro 1/2 sprints, only because David taught me how to sprint with such a high cadence. Not only did he make me faster, but helped me focus on the mental aspect of racing, which changed the way I raced my bike. Any decent coach can teach you to go faster, only coaches like David can teach you how to win.”
Ivie Crawford (17), State Criterium Champion, Now-MS Society Elite Team: “Dave is a master of knowing how to train riders to their fullest capacity, and most importantly knowing when to make them back off. The techniques he teaches rider, combined with his personal race experience and highly developed handling skills sets him apart from other coaches out there. How to be aggressive enough to hold a high position in a pack, descend fast, and avoid crashes. With his past experience of racing, he has been in nearly every situation that could happen to you in a race, and due to this he can help riders overcome their obstacles in a race and know when an opportune moment might occur, before the race even begins, Dave has helped me personally achieve and improve so much in my racing, by both improving my strength and bike handling skills.”
Mark Gustafson (17), Silver Junior State Climbing Championships (Everest Challenge): “I was former triathlete who was unable to finish most junior races. Within three months of being coached by David, I finished second at the CA Climbing Championships (Everest Challenge). My performance at the National Team Development Camp earned me a spot representing the U.S. at the Tour L’Abitibi in Canada. During my last year as a junior, I was easily riding at the front of Pro 1/2 races and was the highest placed Southern California rider in the Junior National Criterium, Road Race and Time Trial events. David’s detailed training programs and emphasis on skills and technical drills made a huge difference in my performance.”
Gabriel Alva (17), New Racer: “Where to begin? My training with David started back when I was about 12 or 13 years old and just starting my cycling career. At a time when my mind was at its most impressionable state, it was crucial that I build a foundation that would last a lifetime. David took advantage of that and started me out learning the basics of bike handling. As I progressed, the drills I went through and tips he gave me put me at the top of my game. Wheel rubbing on the track or in any bike situation went from being my biggest fear of pack riding to a skill that would never let me down. Not only did my conditioning, strength and agressiveness come to be more apparent on a bicycle, but I also got myself out of many dangerous situations with my bike handling skills. Every aspect of my life changed as I trained with David. Being a child and all, not only did my athleticism increase, but also my organizational and time-management skills grew as well. Even as I tried new sports, the coaching I got from David carried on and proved to be timeless and invaluable to my progress. Both his accomplishments and clients are proof of his skill and dedication. When all is said and done, I truly believe that David is a superior coach and athlete. Thank you David for all your teachings!”
Davis Mefford (12), New Racer: “David coached my 12-year-old son, Davis through his first Jr. National’s track event. David has the remarkable ability to translate race tactics into language that my son could understand and act upon during the race. He was very aware as the daily events unfolded and what Davis needed to do in order to improve his overall position. David knew just how much to challenge him and when to encourage him throughout the three-day event. His coaching was instrumental in Davis achieving a 5th place finish in his first Jr. Nationals track event with only 4 months of track racing.”
Rider Achievements
Meredith Zohar (39), Brand New Cyclist, Won 35-39 Malibu Olympic Distance Triathlon and Winner “Queen of the Mountain” Series: When Meredith did my FAST-Start, she had a hybrid bike and with platform pedals. After helping her choose and fit her first ever road bike, we worked on braking, shifting, cornering, standing, and safety skills. After only one week on her new bike, we worked on clipping into and out of the pedals avoiding the typical falling during the learning curve. After only three months on a road bike, she won the 35-39 Olympic Distance Malibu Triathlon (2012). Even more shocking, after 15 months on a road bike, she became “Queen of the Mountain” by winning the overall at SoCal’s biggest climbing series, Breathless Agony, Heartbreak 100, and the infamous Mulholland Challenge (2013). Each of those events is about 100 miles with more than 10,000ft elevation gain.
Allen Bencomo (35), AIDS Ride competed three months on a bike: Completed every mile of the 2002 California AIDS Ride with only three months to prepare: Allen had ridden less than 100 miles over his lifetime, was 25 pounds overweight, and had been relatively sedentary for 10 years. Although I may be able to take the credit for providing him with a scientific, zone specific training program and technical drills to improve his cornering and descending skills, pedaling mechanics and standing skills, situational awareness and roadway safety, he deserves the credit for his relentless dedication to succeed. Allen gets my all-time “zero to hero” award. He was able to accomplish this goal while working 50 hours per week and spending long hours on the bike in the early morning darkness.
Bruce Christensen (57), Retired LAPD/Bike Unit Creator & 1st Bike Unit Coordinator, 4 Gold Medals Police & Fire Games: Bruce hired me as his coach to help him prepare for the International World Police and Fire Games in Quebec and the Western States Police and Fire Games in Reno. Bruce’s technical skills and tactical acumen developed extremely fast, and quickly transforming from a casual recreational rider to a rider with serious race potential. As a shock to his friends and fellow officers, Bruce won 1st place in the Criterium, Time Trial, Sprints, and Road Race at the Western States Police and Fire Games. And then at his first World Games, he earned a bronze in the Time Trial, 6th in the Circuit Race, 10th in the Hill Climb TT, and 10th in the Road Race.
Stephen Strayer (31), Gran Fondo Winner: Steven was a new rider when he arrived in LA. His biggest climbing ride to date was 3,000ft, and his goal during his six month stay in LA was to do 10,000. That goal was accomplished in only three weeks, and several months later he helped Meredith Zohar win the Queen of the Mountain Series using the “domestique” pacing skills I taught him during my grouped coached rider skills sessions. He finished the three series with roughly 30k of climbing, in 14th place in the under 50 age category. He then finished 3rd in the Grand Fondo Giro de Pasadena Long Course ahead of 600+ riders. His goal upon returning home was to finish top 50 in the 160-mile Rain Ride and improve his time of 10:22. With 1,500 starters he finished 15th in 7:35, averaging 21.0 mph for 160 miles. He then won Indian’s infamous Rollfast Fondo.
Joel Goodman (47), Emmy Award Winning Composer: Joel is someone who is no stranger to taking on huge challenges. For someone who has never done any ultra distance riding, and is relatively new to cycling, the Canada to Mexico trans continental event he entered was huge! The event began in Canada and covers 1,943 miles in 19 days with 88,000 feet of climbing by the time the riders reach Mexico. That is an average of more than 100 miles and nearly 5,000 feet of climbing per day for 19 days. With his shockingly fast skill development, especially when it comes to pedaling mechanics and descending skills, his pacing ability, remarkable consistency and determination, including numerous challenging multi-day, high mileage blocks, it is no surprise that he was also one of the event’s fastest daily finishers.
Pat Baker (85), 3x World Hour Record Holder (age 75-79, 80-84, and 85-89), 3x Masters World Champion and 21x National Champion: Pat and I knew each other back in the 1980’s when her daughter was racing and I was still a young junior. Pat hired me as her coach in 2011 and quickly developed the reputation as one of the world’s toughest and most skilled 75+ year old female cyclists. Pat was actually the very first woman to ever attempt and complete the work hour record for 75+, 80+, and 85+ riders. Still today January 2025, she still holds all three World Records. This amazing journey was more than me just trying to get her fast. Pat has a 45-degree curvature in her spine, walks severely hunched over and to the side, drives with a handicapped license plate, but is a monster on our indoor track in Carson, CA which is banked 42-degrees in the corners. Getting her to where she continues to be a trail blazer in woman’s cycling is more than just riding hard, as we are constantly battling against nagging pains, discomforts, and a host of medical issues that come and go to keep her on the bike consistently an relatively pain/discomfort free. Pat is truly an inspiration to everyone who knows her.
Skip Yungfleisch (70), Fast Recreational Rider, 3x Senior Games Gold Medalist: I began coaching Skip more than ten years ago, and in September 2012 he returned to the TeamBrinton program. Within a couple months, his performances began shocking everyone who knows and rides with him. His Strava results are amazing and give confirmation as there are very few, if any, 70+ riders within his league. In his first competitive cycling event, he won three Gold Medals at the 2013 Senior games in Montana. At 69, he beat every rider in the road race and time trials between the ages of 50 and above. Several weeks later on his first attempt, he finished with the lead group on the LA’s super challenging “NOW Ride” from Santa Monica to Trencas up PCH. Skip is one of the nicest people you’ll meet and a true inspiration to those living and training in the Santa Monica mountains.
Hilary Clark (60), Climbed the Tour de France’s famous climb, Mont Ventoux, two weeks on road bike: When we first started working together, Hilary had a hybrid bike with platform pedals. She and her husband signed up for a cycling trip to climb several mountain stages during the 2012 Tour de France which included Mont Ventoux. She hired me as her skills and performance coach only two weeks before leaving for France. I suggested she rent a road bike for our private skills sessions. After learning to clip into the pedals, shift, brake, and ride safely and predictably in traffic, I taught her pacing, standing, and safe descending techniques. On our fifth of seven sessions, she climbed 4,500 feet in Angeles Crest. She then applied the same pacing strategy and determination to reach the top of Mont Ventoux without stopping before reaching the top, which to everyone’s amazement she did successfully, including her husband who I also coached.”
Dean Ziehl (64), New Rider to 3x Senior Games Gold Medalist: As a frustrated new rider unable to keep up with his friends, Dean hired me as his coach. Six months later he completed the 100-mile Ride Around the Bear with 12,000 feet elevation gain. The following year he won three Gold Medals at the Senior Games in Montana in the 60-64 category and finishing ahead of all 50+ riders, except for Skip Yungfleisch who is also one of my 60+ success stories. Through my TeamBrinton program, they have become training partners. Dean also shocked even me with his finishing with the lead group on his first attempt at the 30+ mph Saturday morning “NOW Ride”. Dean ultimately became a dear friend and a rider who developed such amazing skills and was so strategic about his riding, you would never know that he was not an international pro racer in his younger years.
Adrienne Rubin (70), 3x California Coast Classic Finisher: Adrienne had signed up for the 525-mile California Coast Classic Charity Ride, but did not yet have a road bike. After helping her find her perfect bike and then dialing in the fitting, she quickly developed fundamental skills and awareness such as, learning to clip into pedaling for the first time (without falling over), shifting, braking, cornering, climbing, standing, and street safety. After only two months working together, she completed nearly every mile of her first attempt at the Coast Classic in 2011. She has since earned the honors of being the event’s oldest rider and highest fundraiser of more than $30k in one year. Imagine completing nearly 525 miles in a week, three years in a row in your 70’s. Adrienne you are awesome and a true inspiration to so many!
Jennifer Girard (44), 2x Masters National Championship podium (4th and 5th) her first year racing: We started working together late January 2014, and four months later she won the first road race she ever entered. Then over the next five months, she entered 13 more USACycling road events earning ten 1st place finishes and three 2nd place finishes. The following month, she again surprised everyone with a 6th place General Classification finish at the Cascade Classic, 5th in the time trial, and 4th in the road race at Master Nationals. Her 4th place in the road race was after crashing and getting back on the bike. Before crashing she was in position to at least earn a silver medal. Her dedication to cycling was immense. She drove six hours each way from her home in Mammoth to Los Angeles to spend several days per month working on skills and race strategies on the fastest local group rides.
Mauro Paciocco (21), moved to the U.S. from Argentina: Although he was unable to finish his first three MTB races, he did show great potential. Two months after doing my FAST-Start program he was finishing at the front of the toughest SoCal road group rides. His speed and skills were developing so quickly that he went from zero Cat 5 points to a Cat 3 within four weeks and was immediately collecting points toward Cat 2. He finished his first season only five points away from earning his Cat 2 upgrade. He then went back to Argentina, and during the same year, he placed 9th in the Argentinian U23 National Road Championships.
Cameron Fox (23), New Racer, Cat 5 w/zero points to Cat 2 in one season: When Cameron first came to me for coaching, he was a very fit swimmer, with virtually no bike skills or riding experience. We immediately focused on his pedaling mechanics, descending skills, sprinting, attacking, and racing tactics on LA’s most competitive race-oriented group rides. Within a couple months of us working together, to everyone’s amazement he was already doing battle with the local pros on the group rides. In only one year, Cameron went from entering his first USACycling event to becoming a Cat 2. The following season, he remarkably earned his Cat 1 license.
Sean Burkitt (18), USC Student, zero Cat 5 points to a Cat 3 with 25 points in 6 weeks: Prior to us working together, Sean has competed in numerous high school cycling and MTB events, but none were sanctioned by USACycling or counted towards category upgrades. After completing my weight training program, winter epic series, pedaling mechanics, and sprint/attack skills, we focused on racing tactics the Simi and other tough group rides. Sean won his first Cat 5 race. Now for the remarkable part…it only took him two more weekends to earn his Cat 4 upgrade, then only two more weekends to earn his Cat 3 upgrade, and in his first two weekends at a Cat 3, he earned 25 of the 30 points necessary to become a Cat 2. Sean has a unique ability to read races, economize, and set himself in position to unleash a wickedly fast sprint at the end.
Steve Flynn (22), Pro Cycling, Pro MTN, U.S. National Team: When Steve hired me as his cycling coach, he was barely able to finish Cat 3 races. Within three months of us working together, he earned his Cat 2 upgrade. Realizing he had serious potential, I had him enter his first Pro 1,2 stage race, the 2001 Tour de Willamette. The goal was to test him against the U23 National Team. He finished 14th overall with the 2nd highest U23 placing. Two weeks later he was upgraded to a Cat 1 and invited to Europe with the U23 National Team. Tour pro Danny Pate praised Steve in the Nov 2001 USA Cycling magazine for keeping the field strung out preventing an attack that may threaten Danny’s overall victory in Triptyque Ardennais. Danny also mentioned that Steve pulled harder and longer in the last 100k than anyone he has ever experienced. In 2002 Steve raced for the Tour de France bound Mercury Pro Cycling Team.
Sean Tucker (44) Former Pro Racer, Founder of the Toyota United Pro Cycling Team: Sean is a long-time friend since our junior days. Last year he attended my Winter Epic Rides and monthly group Skills Sessions. Sean was so excited to tell me that when he first returned to his summer home in Bend, Oregon he did his usual loop and was shocked that his speed was faster than he rode it 10 years prior. He explained that it was a combination of improved pedaling mechanics, smarter descending, getting out there and doing long rides with excessive climbing and great people to share the time with.
Christine Irelan (41), 3x National Champion and World Silver Medalist: Christine flew from Colorado Springs to Los Angeles to do the FAST-Start and several Skills Sessions. After joining my monthly program in 2009, she entered her first road race and quickly became a threat in the mountains. From 2009-2012 she won 39 of 56 road and MTN bike races she entered. This includes the Cat 3 40-44 Mountain Bike National Championships after only 2 months on a mountain bike. In 2010 she won the Cat 2 MTB Nationals, in 2011 she was 2nd in the Cat 1 MTB Nationals, and in 2012 she won the Cat 1 MTB Nationals and also won a Silver medal at the Master World MTN Bike Championships in Brazil. Christine and I started working together prior to her first MTN bike race 4 years ago, she is now 3x National Champion and a World Silver Medalist.
Jon Tanklage (31), Cat 1 National Champion & NORBA Points Champion: Jon entered two “Clydesdale” races (200+ lbs.) just prior to us working together. During his first full year of racing, he won every race he entered, including the 2002 State XC Championships in the 30-34 Cat 3 Category. His finish times were fast enough to win the Cat 2 Category title. In 2003, he bypassed the Cat 2 and went straight to Cat 1. To everyone’s surprise, he won the Cat 1 (Expert) Category in the 30-34 California State XC Championships. During his third year of racing, he won the Cat 1 National Championships and the NORBA National Point Series with more points than all riders in NORBA points series, including all the Pros.
Meredith Zohar (39), 1/2 Ironman Triathlete, Worlds Qualifier: Meredith recently won the 2012 Nautica Malibu Triathlon in the 35-39 category averaging 20.9 mph on the bike. It was only four months prior to the event that I helped her with the purchase of her first road bike and taught her how to clip in and out of pedals for the first time. The following year, she won cycling’s Queen of the Mountain Series (Mulholland Challenge, Breathless Agony, and Heartbreak 100), qualified for worlds with a 7th place finish at Vineman half Ironman with a bike average of 20.5 mph, and again won the Malibu Triathlon in the 40-44 category with a bike average of 22.0mph. Meredith then qualified for Ironman Worlds.
Chase Renick (17), Green Jersey Winner Le Tour de l’Abitibi: Chase was new to cycling but did have a history as an accomplished young soccer player. It was hard to miss how much power, leg speed, explosiveness he possessed, even as a new cyclist. All he initially lacked was proper pedaling mechanics, standing skills, and tactical knowledge. It was obvious to everyone that his natural strength and motor skill was above and beyond. He began as a diamond in the rough and quickly became the rider to beat with the national team taking notice. After a few months of us working together, he qualified to attend the regional junior national team training camp where the coaches took notice. Then after about six months of my working with Chase, he competed in his first International stage race, the prestigious Le Tour de l’Abitibi in Canada, and finished 7th overall and won the coveted green jersey sprint competition.
Ben Volotzky (17), US National Team: I began coaching Ben when he was 15 and barely finishing junior races. Within a few months, he showed great potential while climbing, attacking, and sprinting. He qualified for the Junior National Team Development Camp and was the top rider at the camp. He was then invited to race with the U.S. National Team in Belgium. After two weeks in Europe, he was at the front in a long break with a great chance to win, only to get caught 1k from the line (we all know that can happen). Ben’s young brother Erik, whom I also coached, followed in his bother’s footsteps by becoming Junior National Criterium Champion and earning his own spot on the U.S. National Team. Their father, Chemi, also has a cycling background as the winner of the 1980 Israeli Olympic Trials as a track sprinter. Leading Ben in the picture is formerly coached Tour pro, Tony Cruz whom I also coached.
Mark Gustafson (17), Junior National Development Team: It was apparent from the start that Mark had great potential but was unable to finish junior races. He did the FAST-Start in May, and within four months he placed 2nd in the CA Climbing Championships (Everest Challenge). His performance at the USA Cycling development camp earned him a spot at the Tour L’Abitibi in Canada. He then became the highest placed SoCal rider in the Junior National Championships in the criterium, road race, and time trial. Although most races he entered were pro 1/2 category, he still managed to earn 7 podium finishes of 13 races entered in his junior category. The following year he was the only western division automatic qualifier invited back to the Canadian International Stage Race, Tour L’Abitibi.
Danny Finneran (17), Junior National Champion Team Pursuit, Rock Racing Junior/U23 Team: I saw Danny racing at the Encino Velodrome and noticed that he had great power, explosiveness, leg speed potential. My main emphasis with Danny was teaching him the racing tactics and bike skills to win. As a natural on the track, he mainly competed in the pro 1/2 category which more than prepared him to win the Junior National Championships in the Team Pursuit.
